SEO? GEO? AEO? What Now?
I thought I had just begun to understand SEO. Choose the right words. Write a clear page title. Describe what you do in language people might actually type into Google. Make sure every page has a call to action. Fine. I could do that.
Now we have GEO and AEO to think about too—and if you are building a personal brand or creative business with limited time, money and people, you may be wondering what on earth you are supposed to do next.
I work with Wix, and it has started helping users think about the questions their websites should answer. That is useful because, until now, most of us have built our websites around what we want people to do: Book a session.Buy the book.Join the workshop.Contact me.
Those calls to action still matter. But before someone acts, they usually have questions.
Increasingly, search engines and AI tools are looking for websites that answer those questions clearly.
That is where AEO and GEO come in.
AEO—Answer Engine Optimization—is about helping search tools find a direct answer on your website.
GEO—Generative Engine Optimization—is about helping AI tools understand your work well enough to include, describe or recommend it in a generated response.
Thankfully, this does not mean rebuilding your entire website every time someone invents another acronym.
When you add a page or write a blog post, begin by asking: What question brought someone here?
Then make sure you answer it—clearly and near the top of the page. Use the words your clients use, not the grand language your industry thinks it should use. Include something specific from your own experience, because your knowledge and point of view are the parts an AI tool cannot manufacture on your behalf.
Make it obvious who you are, what you do and whom you help. Use clear headings. Link to another useful page on your website. Then include the call to action.
In other words:
Answer the question.Show that you know what you are talking about.Help the reader take the next step. SEO helps people find you. AEO helps you answer them. GEO helps AI understand and use what you know.
But all three begin in the same place: being clear, useful and unmistakably yourself.
And perhaps that is the good news. We do not need to become experts in every new acronym. We simply need to stop making people—and machines—guess what we mean.
